Holiday travel is exciting, but leaving your home unattended in winter requires preparation. Weather risks, security concerns, and unexpected repairs can create major issues while you're away. A few simple safety checks can protect your home, save money, and give you peace of mind during your travels.
Start by setting your thermostat to a safe temperature. Never set it lower than 55 degrees, especially in cold climates, to prevent frozen pipes. If you have a smart thermostat, set it to away mode or create a schedule to maintain stable temperatures.
Double-check all doors and windows. Ensure locks are secure, blinds are closed in a natural way, and security systems are armed. If you have cameras, test your connection before leaving so you can monitor your home remotely.
Unplug non-essential appliances. Items like toasters, coffee makers, lamps, and televisions should be disconnected to reduce the risk of electrical fires and to save on energy costs.
Address water risks. Consider shutting off the main water supply if you’ll be gone for an extended period. At minimum, turn off water to washing machines and dishwashers. You can also open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
If you live in a snowy area, arrange for someone to clear snow from your driveway or entryway. Not only does this prevent potential break-ins by making the home look occupied, but it may also be required by HOAs or local regulations.
Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to periodically check in. A simple walk-around can catch early signs of issues like leaks, broken windows, or unexpected packages.
Before leaving, check smoke detectors, take out trash, secure outdoor furniture, and ensure your vehicles are safely stored.
With the right preparation, you can enjoy your holiday travel knowing your home is safe, secure, and protected.
