Whether it’s your first PCS or your fifth, relocating to a new state means starting fresh—and that includes turning on utilities in a place you’ve never lived. From regional power companies to municipal water systems, every location does it a little differently. If you’re in the middle of a PCS move, here’s how to tackle utility setups efficiently so you can settle in quickly.

📌 Start With a Checklist

Before the movers arrive or you hit the road, make a list of the basic services you’ll need: electricity, water, gas (if applicable), trash pickup, internet, cable or streaming, and possibly oil or propane if you’re heading to a more rural base.

📌 Find Out Who Services Your Area

Unlike on-base housing, most off-base neighborhoods are serviced by private or municipal providers. A quick Google search using your new address can usually tell you who provides what. Your MIL-Estate agent can also help with local recommendations and contact info for providers—they’ve been through this, too!

📌 Call Ahead—Don’t Wait Until Move-In Day

Many companies require 24–72 hours to schedule setup. Some even need someone to be home for the first appointment, especially for water or gas. Call ahead so your services are running before your boxes show up.

📌 Budget for Deposits

Each utility company has its own deposit policies, which may vary by state. If you’re active duty, some providers waive deposits with proof of service. Ask about military-friendly policies—many companies offer them.

📌 Document Everything

Once you’re in, take photos of meter readings. If you’re renting, this protects you from back-billing. If you bought the home, it’s just smart recordkeeping as you take ownership of your monthly expenses.

Moving is stressful enough—utility surprises shouldn’t be part of it. A little prep goes a long way.
