Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for kids, and military communities often go all out with decorations and events. While the fun is front and center, safety should always come first—especially when trick-or-treating around base housing or new neighborhoods.
Plan Your Route
Stick to well-lit areas and neighborhoods you’re familiar with. If you’re new to the duty station, ask other families which areas are best for trick-or-treating.
Keep Costumes Safe
Make sure costumes don’t obstruct vision and that kids wear reflective gear or carry glow sticks. This is especially important in busy military neighborhoods with lots of families out and about.
Supervise Young Children
Even in close-knit communities, it’s best to walk with younger kids. For older children, establish clear rules about staying in groups and checking in regularly.
Check Treats Before Eating
Remind kids not to eat anything until you’ve checked their candy. It’s an easy step that gives peace of mind.
Halloween in military communities is a great way to connect with neighbors and create memories, especially if you’re new to the area. A few extra precautions will ensure the night is safe and enjoyable for everyone.
